While making the silver harder, however, it also gives the silver a tendency to tarnish - a darkening which occurs when the sterling silver reacts with gases in the air or other substances that it comes in contact with.

Proper care of your fine sterling silver pieces:

First & foremost: DO NOT use a cleaner that contains abrasives as this will scratch and dull your sterling silver jewelry.
A solution of warm water & a mild detergent used with a soft cotton cloth is best especially for pieces which contain precious gemstones. Silver polish can cause damage to your gemstones. A soft bristle brush can be used to reach into more intricate parts of the sterling silver piece.
