Paspaley South Sea cultured pearls, like natural South Sea pearls, are guaranteed to be of natural color and luster without artificial enhancements. The most common error is to assume all types of pearls are the same, especially with cultured pearls. The appearance of many types of cultured pearls is artificially enhanced after harvesting. The quality of their color and luster is primarily determined by the quality of post-harvest coloring and polishing. The Paspaley South Sea cultured pearls appearance is derived entirely from the pearls countless thick layers of natural pearl nacre. It is this natural pearly substance which ensures that the pearl you purchase from us will maintain its beauty for generations.
Without delving into technical details, nacre quality is the major determining factor of pearl quality for South Sea cultured pearls. Without luster, the pearl can have no beauty. Without beauty, the pearl has no quality.
Luster aside, there are various other fundamental factors to be considered when assessing pearls for purchase - we call these the five virtues of the pearl: luster, size, shape, color, and complexion:
Luster:
All pearls from the Paspaley Pearling Company are of high exceptional luster - by far the most important feature of South Sea cultured pearls - and are guaranteed to be of natural color and luster. The pearls are all of excellent luster due to the quality and thickness of the nacre. Luster describes the beauty you see as light travels through the nacre of the pearl. Luster is not confused with surface shine. Luster comes from deep within the nacre, much as light filters from the depths of a clear blue sea. Only South Sea cultured pearls have the depth, and more importantly, the quality and richness of nacre for the light to be so perfectly refracted to produce true luster.
Size:
South Sea cultured pearls dominate the pearl world in quality and size, and are generally found in sizes between 10mm and 15mm.
Shape:
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is certainly the case when it comes to pearl shapes. Due to the thickness of their nacre, South Sea cultured pearls are found in an interesting variety of shapes. The shape of a pearl does not affect its quality. For convenience, South Sea cultured pearls are graded into twelve shape categories.
These are in ascending order:
1---Circle
2---Triangle
3---Baroque
4---Topped Drop
5---Short Drop
6---Flat Button
7---Reverse Drop
8---Full Button
9---Oval
10---Drop
11---Near Round
12---Round
Color:
The most popular is white or white with slight overtones. The overtone colors of the South Sea cultured pearl are the natural colors of the South Sea pearl shell, and cover the full spectrum of the rainbow - including pink.
******It should be noted that all Paspaley South Sea cultured pearls are of natural color and luster and are not enhanced by any artificial means.******
Complexion:
Pearls may have natural surface blemishes or spots which may or may not detract from the pearls beauty - depending on the quality, depth, or visibility spots. Pearls are graded into Statement, Fine, Fashion, and Foundation according to the quality of their complexion:
Statement:
Exceptional quality pearls. When set in jewelry or strung in a strand, the face of the pearl is effectively spotless and the nacre of the pearl is virtually free of movement. These pearls have exquisite deep luster with the finest quality nacre.
Fine:
Premium quality pearls. When set in jewelry or strung in a strand, the face of the pearl appears spotless and the nacre of the pearl appears free of movement. On close inspection, however, very slight imperfections in the surface and/or movement in the nacre may be seen. The pearls are usually set in a way that makes the skin appear clean. These pearls have beautiful luster and very fine quality nacre.
Fashion:
High quality pearls. From a normal social viewing distance the face of the pearl may appear clean and the nacre of the pearl may appear free of movement. Upon closer inspection the pearls have imperfections in the surface and slight movement in the nacre. These pearls have beautiful luster and very fine quality nacre.
Foundation:
Good quality pearls. From a normal social viewing distance the face of the pearl has visible spots and the nacre of the pearl may have noticeable movement. These pearls have good luster and fine quality nacre.
******Please note the above characteristics apply to regular shaped pearls. Visible surface characteristics are normally seen in Circle and Baroque shapes due to the nature of the pearls and the way they are formed within the shell.******
We hope the above information will assist you in making an informed decision for which is the perfect pearl for you.
